Guide To Memorial Day Services – Parades, Ceremonies and Closures

Memorial Day may look different in 2022 than it has the past two years, with most larger cemeteries and memorial parks offering events to commemorate the holiday Monday, May 30. Check with venues before heading out to confirm.

Here’s a guide to Memorial Day services, parades and community gatherings throughout Oregon for the holiday that honors those who have died in U.S. wars. All events are free.

Below that, find a list of services and government offices that adjust their hours and schedules for the federal holiday.

National cemeteries, including Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, will be open for gravesite memorials and the placing of flags or flowers by individuals or groups. Many will have a ceremony to mark the day. Willamette’s ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Monday at 1800 S.E. Mt. Scott Blvd, Happy Valley, free; cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/willamette.asp

The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs will host Oregon’s annual statewide Memorial Day Ceremony in person this year. The event includes remarks from veteran leaders, a color guard, performance of the National Anthem and Taps. 11 a.m. Monday, at the Oregon World War II Memorial on the Oregon State Capitol grounds in Salem; oregon.gov/newsroom/pages

Albany Memorial Day Ceremony welcomes keynote speaker Nita Eggers, who won a Congressional Gold Medal for her service as Albany’s own Rosie the Riveter during World War II. Lone Fir Cemetery in Southeast Portland is open but will have no public ceremony.

Veterans for Peace will hold a Memorial Day cleanup and work party. 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Peace Memorial Park, at the corner of Northeast Oregon Street and Lloyd Boulevard. Advance registration is encouraged; solveoregon.org

Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park will host a ceremony. 10 a.m. Monday, 4000 S.W. Canyon Road; portland.gov/parks

Veterans Memorial Park in Beaverton will have a ceremony including speakers, several bands, a playing of “Taps,” a Howitzer salute and two flyovers. 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, in the park at Southwest Washington Street at Watson Avenue, Beaverton; memorialdayoregon.com

Hillsboro Pioneer Cemetery offers a community event that includes speakers and music to honor those who died while in the United States service. 11 a.m. Monday, at the cemetery, 150 S.W. Baseline St., Hillsboro; hillsboro-oregon.gov/our-city

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site’s Memorial Day commemoration is open to the public and includes a service, followed by a free lunch. 11 a.m. Monday, at the Bandstand at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, west of 1501 Evergreen Blvd., Vancouver; cmac11.com/event

North Plains Veterans Memorial Park will hold a ceremony. 11 a.m. Monday, at the park, 313th and Highland Court, North Plains; northplains.org/publicworks

Gresham Heroes Memorial will host a ceremony. 11 a.m. Monday, at the memorial site, East Powell Boulevard and Southeast Roberts Avenue, Gresham.

Wilsonville Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony: The Korean War Veterans Association is hosting its annual commemoration ceremony to honor and mourn the military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. 11 a.m. Monday, Town Center Park / Korean War Memorial, 29600 S.W. Prineville Memorial Day Parade: The annual parade travels down Fourth and Main streets ending at the Memorial Park area of Ochoco Creek Park, where there are POW/MIA and Hot Shots monuments. Seaside ceremony and parade: American Legion Post 99 hosts a memorial service and wreath lowering followed by a motorcycle parade down Broadway to the Turnaround. Klamath Falls Memorial Day: The city offers a sunrise service at 6 a.m. in the Memorial Park Cemetery and a parade at 10 a.m. along Main and Spring streets to Veterans Park. Holiday closures and schedule changes

Public transportation:

TriMet buses and MAX will run on Sunday schedules on Monday, May 30. WES will have no service.

C-Tran will run on Sunday/Holiday schedules on Monday, May 30.

Portland Aerial Tram is closed.

Government offices:

Federal courts and offices are closed.

Oregon and Washington state offices and courts are closed.

Portland parking meters are free on Monday, May 30, only. Pay during regular Sunday hours.

Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington and Clark county offices, city of Portland and Vancouver offices, Metro regional center are closed.

Postal mail (USPS) will not be delivered Monday, May 30, and post offices will be closed.

Banks:

closed, some in-store branches may be open
