Calendar Event Sorting

At the top, the 24/7/365 SAMHSA Disaster Helpline and similar links.

Next, Bundled “All Day” Events

Some organizations (like 12 step recovery programs, AA, NA, AlAnon, etc.) have so many events happening throughout the day that they need to be in a bundled listing to spare endless scrolling.  Often there is a link to look up events by zip code and other criteria.

Lastly, Time-Specific Events

So you can see what’s happening in the next hours, time specific events are tagged and listed by start time from 12:01am early morning to 11:59pm late night.  There can be events and warmlines operating in different time zones, though we try to list all in Oregon’s Pacific Time Zone.

Page Advancement

The calendar displays ~50 listings per page.  To advance to next page with ~50 more listings, click the right arrow in the lower left corner of the calendar

Compulsive gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. A preferred term among many professionals is problem gambling, as few people described by the term experience true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word. Problem gambling often is defined by whether harm is experienced by the gambler or others rather…

The acronym HAMS stands for Harm reduction, Abstinence, and Moderation Support. HAMS provides pragmatic strategies to enable individuals to reduce the risks associated with drinking. Alcohol Harm Reduction is non-judgmental–it sees nothing inherently wrong or diseased about recreational intoxication. Alcohol Harm Reduction recognizes that most drinkers have no wish to harm or kill themselves or others.
Alcohol Harm Reduction does not seek to force individuals to change in ways which they do not choose for themselves. Alcohol Harm Reduction respects every person as a unique individual and supports each individual in the goal which he/she has chosen for him/herself. Alcohol Harm Reduction neither promotes nor condemns drinking. Alcohol Harm Reduction supports goals of safer drinking, reduced drinking, or abstinence from alcohol or other substances.
The HAMS Harm Reduction Network provides information and support for people who wish to reduce the harm in their lives caused by the use of alcohol. We support every positive change.

REDDITORSINRECOVERY RULES

Don’t be obnoxious

We all have our own ideas of what recovery is, and many of us are very passionate about our ideas. Please be considerate that what worked for others might not be the same as what worked for you.

No promotion of outside sources (youtube channel, blog, company, etc)

This particular community is about direct conversation between people trying or wanting to recover in hopes of sharing our experience. There are plenty of other communities on reddit that allow youtube channel posts.

No solicitations to studies or research

While studies are great, we can’t sort the good material from the bad or fake marketing pushes, so no solicitation to studies of any kind.

No doxxing, period

Don’t post anything that identifies an individual or gives any information about that individual, including but not limited to email or physical address, real name, workplace, or accounts on other services.

No medical advice

What is Families Anonymous?

Families Anonymous celebrated our 50th Anniversary in 2021. We were formed in 1971 by a group of concerned parents in California who were seeking ways of dealing with the problem of substance abuse and addiction in their children. Our members include parents, grandparents, siblings, spouses, significant others, other family members and friends of those with a current, suspected or former drug problem. We have been one of the best kept secrets in the recovery community, even though we have groups throughout the world.

Families Anonymous is a 12 Step fellowship for the families and friends who have known a feeling of desperation concerning the destructive behavior of someone very near to them, whether caused by drugs, alcohol, or related behavioral problems. When you come into our rooms you are no longer alone, but among friends who have experienced similar problems. Any concerned person is encouraged to attend our meetings, even if there is only a suspicion of a problem.

Your identity is protected in our meetings. We know each other by our first names only. Anonymity of our members is paramount to the success of our program. Not only is anonymity an underlying principle of the program, but it is so important that it is part of our name.

You have nothing to lose but your pain and anger. Read on if you are ready to find the peace and serenity that our members have found through the working of the FA program.

What is ACA?

ACA is a 12 Step program that focuses on emotional sobriety.

We were all profoundly affected by the dysfunction in our families of origin, whether alcohol was present in the home or not.  Consequently, we developed a set of “laundry list” traits that helped us survive that experience.  These traits may have been adaptive at the time, but have now come to substantially disrupt our lives.

We recover by “working our program.”  This means attending ACA meetings and working the Twelve Steps.  The Steps are not meant to be worked in isolation, which is why we work with more experienced members, a twelve-step group, and/or our fellow travelers (others in ACA).

ACA is a spiritual program, not a religious program. The only requirement for membership is a desire to recover from the effects of growing up in an alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional family. ACA has no membership fees.

Since each meeting is autonomous, and each meeting can be a different experience, we recommend that if your first meeting is not a fit for you, try other meetings before deciding if the ACA program can be helpful in your journey from discovery to recovery.

Meetings are intended to be a safe place. We share our experience, strength, and hope; we offer compassion and understanding.  We also have the right not to share, unless we are ready.  We welcome you to join us.

Please note that ACA is not a replacement for addicts working an abstinence program in other Twelve Step fellowships.  Adult Children of Alcoholics works best for people that have obtained a level of sobriety in their other program(s).

To Attend A Meeting In a Chat Room

When you first log on you will be in The Lounge which is not a meeting room, but open chat fellowship available 24/7 to members of all 12-step groups.

To go to the meeting rooms from The Lounge, click on the 3-dot menu icon at the top left of the chat screen, then click on the meeting room you wish to enter. If you don’t see the 3 dots, click the ESC key or swipe from the left if you are on a mobile device.

Tips for Chat Meetings

There is no real protocol for “informal” chat gatherings in our open chat rooms, but in our meeting rooms, we try to keep it as much of a face-to-face meeting as possible. Just as in a face-to-face meeting, we do not interrupt the person who is “speaking” or crosstalk after they are done.

Also, as in a face-to-face meeting, someone serves as the “chairperson” who opens the meetings, picks a topic and helps keep the meeting focused on the topic discussion as members take turn sharing on the topic.

Some of our meetings have a “greeter” who sends a private message to any late-comers to the meeting to welcome them and tell them the topics of discussion. If the late-comer is new to online meetings, the greeter may also explain briefly how meetings work (see below).

NOTE: To send someone a private message during the meeting, click on their name in the members’ list to the right of the chat window. To receive a private message, click on the name of the person who sent it.

If you wish to share, type an exclamation point like this: !. It’s like raising your hand.

The chair of the meeting will then call on the next person to share. In our chat rooms, it is best to type short lines followed by “. . .” which indicates that you are not finished. Like this:

One of the best tools I have found …
When I find myself under stress …
Is the Serenity Prayer … [done]

The [done] at the ends shows that you are finished, and the chairperson then will call on the next person to share.

That’s it. Those simple tools can keep things orderly even in a full chat room.

For instructions on how to log on to the chat rooms, please see this page.

WHAT IS RECOVERY DHARMA?

Recovery Dharma is a peer-led movement and community that is unified by our trust in the potential of each of us to recover and find freedom from the suffering of addiction. We believe that the traditional Buddhist teachings, often referred to as the Dharma, offer a powerful approach to healing from addiction and living a life of true freedom.

We believe that recovery means empowerment, and we support each other as partners walking the path together. We believe that recovery is rooted in finding our own inner wisdom and individual journeys.

Recovery Dharma is founded on, and inspired by, Buddhism that originated in India and later on flourished in other regions of Asia (e.g., South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia). We deeply appreciate the Buddhist heritage that was protected and freely offered by the ancestors of these cultures.

Compulsive gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. A preferred term among many professionals is problem gambling, as few people described by the term experience true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word.

About Refuge Recovery

Buddhism recognizes a non-theistic approach to spiritual practice. The Refuge Recovery program of recovery does not ask anyone to believe anything, only to trust the process and do the hard work of recovery. This program contains a systematic approach to treating and recovering from all forms of addictions. Using the traditional formulation, the program of recovery consists of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. When sincerely practiced, the program will ensure a full recovery from addiction and a lifelong sense of well-being and happiness. Of course, like every path, you can only get to your destination by moving forward, one foot in front of the other. The path is gradual and comprehensive, a map of the inner terrain that must be traversed in the process of recovery. The path includes daily meditation practices, written investigations of the causes and conditions of your addictions, and how to find or create the community you will need in order to heal and awaken. Our community helps shape, inform, and enhance the program with their direct experience of practicing these principles. This program, then, should be viewed as a collaborative effort. We have every intention to learn, grow and evolve.
